Kuti Heritage Museum

The Kuti Heritage Museum is a newly renovated building which now serves as a tourist attraction in Abeokuta. The Museum, now a top sight in the city of Abeokuta, used to be the home to the parents of the Legendary Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, Mr. Israel Oludotun Ransome-Kuti and Mrs. Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti. The Museum now has an aesthetic landscape, a proper management and creative setups aimed at promoting tourism, culture & the African heritage, and to preserve the monuments of the Kuti’s inspiring culture. Kuti Heritage Museum is definitely your pick on your next trip or vacation.

For years, the twin building that served as home to Fela’s parent, Mr and Mrs. Ransome-Kuti in Isabo, Abeokuta, was in a despicable state. The structures were dilapidating, due to erosion and it was being abused by squatters and residents who turned the house into a refuse dump. The renovation however started with Architect Theo Lawson who is known to be a promoter of art legacies, and African culture, plus he had a directional passion to preserve the Kuti’s legacy like he had done before; reconstructing the Afro beat legend, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti’s former residence at Gbemisola Street, Ikeja, Lagos into the now popular Kalakuta Museum in Lagos. Together with the Kuti family, they started the renovation that turned the building into a beauty, receiving massive support from the Ogun State Government.

First Storey Building in Nigeria

The first-storey building is located in Badagry, Lagos State. The foundation of the building was laid in 1842 and the house was completed in 1845.History has it that the ancient structure was erected by Reverend Henry Townsend of the Church Missionary Society (CMS). The structure was occupied by Samuel Ajayi Crowther, the first African C.M.S Bishop when he undertook the translation of the Holy Bible from English to Yoruba. It was also used as Vicarage for Saint Thomas Anglican church. The white one-storey building has four stores, six rooms, two sitting rooms, a safe and it overlooks the marina waterfront. In the upper floor of the building, there is a glass containing the English and Yoruba versions of the Bible that was translated by Bishop Ajayi Crowther.

Olumo Rock

Olumo which means “troubles and sufferings are all over” is a famous massive outcrop of granite rocks that have a primitive formation. The rock stands 137 meters above sea level in a spot that is surrounded by caves. A mustard tree that has lived for over 200 years can be found at its entrance. This gigantic rock which served as a shelter for the Egba people during the intercity wars in the 1830s still stands today in its original position in the city of Abeokuta. Olumo Rock Complex, situated at the rocky and mountainous foot of the Olumo rock.  The complex has modern infrastructures including an eatery, museum, conference hall, multipurpose halls, etc. It even has a constructed stairway to aid visitors with a phobia for climbing heights safe passage to the mountains.

Established in 2017, the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library is a tourist and academic center that houses historic documents and materials used by former President Obasanjo. The library/museum is massive and magnificent. It houses millions of interesting documents, books, and artefacts that represent significant events in the history of Nigeria and Africa. The library is located at Abeokuta, Ogun State in Nigeria.

Second Storey Building in Nigeria

This structure was built at a time where most of the buildings found in the country were made of mud, thatch, sticks, or bricks. This building which was first a church, (the Saint James Anglican Church) was built in 1945. It is also the place where the late Bishop Ajayi Crowther who was the first African Anglican bishop of West Africa to translate the English holy bible to Yoruba lived.

The Oldest Bible in Nigeria

This bible whose current home is the Ake palace in Abeokuta state is the oldest in Nigeria. It was presented in July 1904 by King Edward VII of Great Britain and Ireland after the other bible that was presented by Queen Victoria of England to Chief Akinrinlewo Sodeke in 1848 was burnt in a fire disaster in 1868.

Kajuru Castle is a luxury Medieval-German style villa, built over 3 decades ago located in Kaduna State, Nigeria. The villa is designed with bedrooms modeled after dungeons and several towers with crenelated walls. The medieval theme is seen throughout the castle, it even has a portcullis (the vertically closing gate) with a crocodile pit. Osun Osogbo Grove

Osun-Osogbo is a sacred grove along the banks of the Osun river just outside the city of Osogbo, Osun State of Nigeria. The Osun-Osogbo Grove is several centuries old and is among the last of the sacred forests that once adjoined the edges of most Yoruba cities before extensive urbanization. In recognition of its global significance and its cultural value, the Sacred Grove was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005. The 1950s witnessed the desecration of the Osun-Osogbo Grove: shrines were neglected and priests abandoned the grove as customary responsibilities and sanctions weakened. Prohibited actions like fishing, hunting and falling of trees in the Grove was done indiscriminately until an Austrian national named Susanne Wenger (1915-2009) helped to reinstate traditional protections. The dense forest of the Osun Sacred Grove, on the outskirts of the city of Osogbo, is one of the last remnants of primary high forest in southern Nigeria. Regarded as the abode of the goddess of fertility Osun, one of the pantheon of Yoruba gods, the landscape of the grove and its meandering river is dotted with sanctuaries and shrines, sculptures and art works in honour of Osun and other deities. The sacred grove, which is now seen as a symbol of identity for all Yoruba people, is probably the last in Yoruba culture. It testifies to the once widespread practice of establishing sacred groves outside all settlements.

Idanre Hills

Idanre hill is one of the most awesome and beautiful natural landscapes in Ondo State and Nigeria. Added to its beauty which fires human curiosity is the fact that the entire people of Idanre lived on these boulders for almost a millennium. Since emigration down hill in 1923, the topography, vegetation as well as the fauna and floral life have remained undistributed. However, the festivals provides occasions for reconciliation of the low-landers and their natural environments as well as reenactments or historical episodes in local Idanre history and its wider Yoruba ideology, mythology and confederacy. There is the Ogun festival, which is partly celebrated on top of the hills during October and Ije festival, which spread over seven days. Apart from the festivals, which make the site a living tradition, the flora and fauna of the hills are also unique. There is a special species of tailless animal called Hyrax that lives on the rocks which because of hunting are becoming extinct and there are special monkeys sported near Orosun hills. The hill is also plays host to a group of scientists and field researchers. The site is home to a group of bats and the people hold a unique festival of bats every year. The hill is being used by filmmakers as location for many of their films. In addition, the one and only Nobel Prize Winner for Literature in Africa Professor Wole Soyinka wrote his longest poem titled "Idanre and other Poems".
